Meaning

Er FF on an LG refrigerator (also shown as E FF or just FF) is a freezer evaporator-fan fault: the control board is not getting a normal rotation signal from the fan. By far the most common cause is ice from a failed defrost cycle jamming the fan blade. The first move is a power reset; if the code returns, you are looking at ice buildup or the fan motor itself.

⚠ Safety first. Always unplug the refrigerator before removing the rear freezer panel to reach the fan. Do not chip or pry at ice with a knife or pick — you can puncture an evaporator tube and release refrigerant, which turns a cheap repair into a sealed-system replacement.   2. Full manual defrost — if the code comes back, LG’s own fix is to unplug the unit and leave both doors wide open so the ice around the fan melts: about 1 day in summer, up to 3 days in winter. Move food to a cooler and lay towels to catch meltwater.
  3. Speed it up (optional) — to shorten the thaw, remove the rear freezer evaporator panel (a few Phillips screws) and melt the visible ice with a hair dryer on low, kept ~6 inches back from plastic. Never use anything sharp on the coils.
  4. Spin-test the fan — with the unit unplugged and panel off, flick the fan blade by hand. It should spin freely. A blade that is stiff or grinds indicates a failing motor bearing.
  5. Test the fan motor — check the motor for continuity/resistance with a multimeter; an open or out-of-range reading means the motor is dead and needs replacing.
  6. Inspect the wiring — look for a pinched, chafed, or disconnected harness at the fan connector before condemning any part.

FAQ

Will my food spoil while I fix Er FF?

A full manual defrost means the unit is off for a day or more, so move perishables to a cooler with ice. If you cannot afford that downtime, a technician can melt the ice and replace the fan faster than an ambient thaw.

Why does the fan keep icing up again?

A fan that re-ices after a thaw is telling you the defrost system has failed — usually the defrost heater, thermostat, or sensor is not clearing frost on schedule. Melting the ice fixes the symptom; the defrost part fixes the cause.

Is Er FF the same as Er rF?

No. Er FF is the freezer evaporator fan; Er rF refers to the refrigerator-compartment fan. They are related air-circulation faults but point at different fans, so confirm which code you actually see.
