GE Dryer E1 and E2 Error Codes: What They Really Mean (GE Does Not Use E-Codes)
Meaning
GE dryers do not use an E1 or E2 fault code. The two documented GE dryer fault-code families are numeric (000–009, plus 00d) on GFD-series front-loaders, and F-prefixed (F01–F011) on CleanSpeak models. Neither list contains a single E-code. If your GE dryer is showing a bare “1” or “2” and will not start, GE’s own support page says that is not a fault at all — on models from 2019 and newer it is the dryer asking you to pick its “personality” setting: 1 = electric, 2 = gas, toggled with the START button. If you genuinely see the letter E in front of the number, you are almost certainly looking at a Frigidaire/Electrolux-built dryer (that is the brand family whose dryers really do use E-codes), or misreading GE’s F01/F03 or 001/003 — which, as it happens, are GE’s inlet-thermistor codes. That is why “E1 = thermistor” keeps getting repeated: the meaning is roughly right, the label is not GE’s.
⚠ Safety first. A US electric dryer runs on a dedicated 240 V circuit; a gas dryer runs on 120 V and also carries a fuel line. Any check that involves the terminal block, the power cord, the heater circuit or the control board means switching the dryer off at the breaker, not just at the front panel. If you find scorched, melted or frayed wiring at the terminal block, stop and call a technician — that is a fire risk, not a code to clear. Never bypass a door switch or a thermal cut-off to “test” a dryer.
Start here: read the display literally
Almost every wrong answer to this question comes from paraphrasing the display. Before you buy any part, write down exactly what is on the screen, character for character:
- Just a “1” or a “2”, no letter, and the dryer will not turn on or tumble → this is the personality setting, not a fault. Skip to the next section; the fix takes ten seconds and costs nothing.
- A three-digit number like 001, 003, 005 → you have a GFD-series GE dryer. Use the numeric table below.
- F followed by digits — F01, F02, F09 → you have a CleanSpeak-generation GE dryer. Use the F-code table below.
- A genuine E followed by digits or a digit-letter pair — E4A, E5B, E64, E68 → check the badge and the model number. Those are Frigidaire/Electrolux dryer codes. Plenty of dryers get sold, moved and inherited without their owners being sure of the brand.
On a seven-segment display an F and an E are two segments apart, and a leading zero is easy to drop. “E1” is what a hurried glance at F01 looks like.
A bare “1” or “2”: the personality setting (2019 and newer)
This is the single most useful thing on this page, and it comes straight from GE Appliances’ own support article Dryer – Will Not Run or Start. GE builds electric and gas dryers on shared control hardware, and the board has to be told which one it is living in. GE writes:
On some models (2019 and newer), the dryer may need its “personality” settings selected. When this happens, the dryer may not turn on or tumble and a “1” or “2” appears in the display. Pressing the START button toggles between valid personalities (1 or 2).
GE’s instruction for setting it is exactly two lines: select “1” for electric dryers and select “2” for gas dryers. So:
- Confirm what you own. A gas dryer has a flexible gas connector and a shut-off valve behind it and plugs into an ordinary 120 V outlet. An electric dryer has a large three- or four-prong cord on a 240 V outlet.
- Press START repeatedly to toggle the display between 1 and 2.
- Leave it on 1 for electric or 2 for gas, then start a normal cycle.
This most often shows up on a brand-new install, after a control-board replacement, or after a power event that cleared the board’s settings. It is not a failure, and no part is involved. Note that GE lists this alongside its other “won’t start” checks: dryer plugged fully in, door closed tightly, door switch not scorched or pushed in, and house breakers intact — GE specifies the dryer should be on a separate/dedicated circuit.
GE dryer fault codes, family 1: GFD-series front-loaders
These are the documented codes for GE dryers whose model number begins with GFD, as published in Sears PartsDirect’s fault table for that family.

Code 007 is worth calling out: a reversed L2/Neutral is a miswired power cord, not a broken dryer, and it is common right after a move or a new install. Fix the wiring rather than ordering parts.

The two families run parallel for the first several codes — inlet thermistor, outlet thermistor, control board, stuck key, power-cord wiring, in that order — and then diverge: 008/00d is a door-switch fault while F08 is a housekeeping notice, and 009 is the drive motor while F09 is the heater. Do not translate a code from one list into the other.
So where does “GE dryer E1 = thermistor” come from?
Three separate things got blended together, and the result is now copied across dozens of pages.
Reason 1: E-codes are a Frigidaire convention, not a GE one
Sears PartsDirect’s Frigidaire dryer fault table is wall-to-wall E-codes: E10, E11, E12, E24, E25, E4A, E5B, E68, E8C, EAF. (E4A = dry time exceeded, usually a heating-system problem; E5B = heating system, check the breaker on an electric dryer or the gas supply on a gas one; E68 = stuck key.) When a generic “dryer error codes” article gets re-skinned per brand, the E-code skeleton comes along with it and lands under a GE headline.
Reason 2: The meaning half-survives the mistranslation
GE’s low codes really are the temperature sensors: 001/003 and F01/F03 are the inlet thermistor; 002/004 and F02/F04 are the outlet thermistor. So “the first code is the thermistor” is a defensible instinct — it is just not a code called E1, and the pages asserting it do not cite GE for it. We could not find any GE Appliances page that defines E1 or E2 for a dryer. GE does publish dedicated Error, Fault or Function Codes articles for its dishwashers and refrigerators; for dryers it publishes no equivalent code list, and its article that actually explains a number appearing in a dryer display is the “will not run or start” one quoted above.
Reason 3: The claims contradict each other
Once a code has no manufacturer definition, every page is free to invent one, and they have:
- Several repair blogs assign E1 = thermistor open / inlet temperature-sensor circuit failure.
- Others hedge to “these lower codes typically point at the thermistor” — a tell that no source is being consulted.
- The door-lock meaning that circulates is attached to
E1F, notE1, in the lists that carry it — andE1Fappears in neither documented GE family. - A repair-trade information site defines GE dryer
E01as an EEPROM error (control-board memory), which is a fourth, incompatible reading. We could not verify it against GE literature, so treat it as unconfirmed.
The ohm rule that will make you replace a good part
This is the practical cost of the mix-up. A widely repeated line says a dryer thermistor is defective if it reads above 50K ohms. Apply that to a GE and you will condemn a perfectly good sensor: GE’s published spec for the inlet thermistor is 47.6K–52.4K ohms at 77 °F — a healthy part sits right at 50K — and the outlet thermistor is 98K–102K ohms at 77 °F, roughly double. The generic “10K at room temperature” figure quoted in a lot of dryer content belongs to other platforms entirely. Test a GE thermistor against the GE window, at a known room temperature, and check the right sensor for the code you have.
What to actually do next
- Re-read the display and note the exact characters, including any leading zero and any letter.
- Bare 1 or 2? Toggle with START to 1 (electric) or 2 (gas). Done.
- Find the model number — usually on a sticker inside the door opening or on the rear panel. A model starting with GFD sends you to the numeric table; a CleanSpeak-badged machine to the F-code table; anything that turns out to be Frigidaire/Electrolux means you were reading a genuine E-code all along.
- Power-cycle before buying anything. Unplug or switch the breaker off for about three minutes, restore power, then run a short timed-dry cycle and watch whether the code returns. Transient codes from a power event clear here.
- Clear the vent before suspecting a sensor. A blocked lint filter or exhaust duct drives exhaust temperatures out of range and produces heat-related codes with entirely healthy parts — the same failure pattern behind LG’s d80/d90/d95 flow-sense codes. It is also the cheapest thing on this list.
- Then test the specific sensor named by your code, against the ohm windows above.
When to call a pro
- The terminal block or power cord shows burning, melting or frayed strands — and any suspected L2/Neutral reversal, which is line-voltage wiring work (240 V on an electric dryer, 120 V on a gas one).
- You have a gas dryer and the code points at the heating system: gas valves, igniters and flame sensors are not a first DIY project.
- The code survives a power-cycle, a clean vent and a correct sensor reading — you are into control-board territory, the same call as a Whirlpool F01 control-board fault.
- You are not comfortable working inside the cabinet with the dryer isolated at the breaker, or you cannot confirm the machine is actually de-energised.
Frequently asked questions
Does a GE dryer have an E1 code?
No GE-published dryer code list contains one. The two documented GE dryer families use numeric codes (000–009, 00d) and F-codes (F01–F011). If a page tells you “GE dryer E1 means X”, ask which GE document it is quoting.
My GE dryer shows “1” and will not start. Is it broken?
Probably not. On 2019-and-newer models GE documents a “1” or “2” in the display as the personality prompt: press START to toggle, and leave it on 1 for an electric dryer or 2 for a gas one.
Is E1 the same as F01 on a GE dryer?
Not officially, but F01 is the code people are most often looking at. On CleanSpeak models F01 (and F03) is the inlet thermistor, which is why the popular “E1 = thermistor” claim keeps landing close to the truth despite the wrong label.
How do I reset a GE dryer error code?
Cut power at the breaker or unplug the dryer for about three minutes, restore power, then run a short timed-dry cycle and see whether the code comes back. GE’s documented reset for a control-board code (005) is the same three-minute power-down. A code that returns immediately is reporting a live fault, not a stuck memory.
Which brand of dryer actually uses E1 and E2?
Frigidaire/Electrolux dryers are the family with a genuine E-code set (E10, E11, E12, E24, E25, E4A, E5B, E68, E8C, EAF). If your display really does start with an E, check the badge and the model number before you troubleshoot it as a GE.

What we could not verify: no GE Appliances page defining E1 or E2 as dryer fault codes was found, and no source for the “door latch” reading of E1 that stands up — the door meaning belongs to E1F in the lists that carry it, and E1F is absent from both documented GE families.
